Burnley . . . Memories of the 1930’s – 1940’s

Sam Hanna, Cabinet maker, teacher, inventor and film maker was born in Burnley & lived in the town most of this century. He pioneered the use of film in schools as a means of instruction. In 1932 he started to film life and events in Burnley as well as capturing dying local crafts for posterity on movie film. He is well known in the town and many of his films have been shown on the big screen in Burnley. Now is your chance to capture life in Burnley's past on video.

1935 Football Burnley v Luton Town.

1939 - 1945 Wartime: The Home Guard, Burnley's own dad's army, wartime and victory scenes, the Royal visit in 1945 and the stand down of wartime's volunteer services.

After the war: Games of the century played by the children in the streets, Youth week, The Royal Lancashire Show in 1948, building and launching a barge on the Leeds Liverpool Canal. In 1949 we see the Mayor's parade and Sunday School walking day. In 1950 Bronze Age remains are discovered and there is the General Election.

Finally as we enter the 50s there are many general scenes of Burnley as you may have known the town - familiar scenes no more.
